Quiet Repose

Karsten asked me yesterday,

do people ever get angry at the guy giggling, taking pictures and saying “busted?”

and I’d like to answer that question. Or, really, a more interesting one, because let’s be honest, Karsten isn’t very interesting.

The short answer is yes. People react in all sorts of ways when they see that their picture is being taken. At times this can be avoided by just pretending I was taking a photo of something near them. But other times they know, and they can really give me a mean look.

But the best is when someone walks past me while I’m taking a photo of something else and they stop and look and try to see what it is I’m taking a photo of. Sometimes it’s a trash can and I’ve had several people laugh at me, a few even question me “What the hell you taking a photo of?” I just explain as briefly as possible and laugh awkwardly as much as possible and usually that gets them to leave.

Glad to hear you’re getting a mixed bag of responses, Cog–I was on the main street in Nantucket over the weekend with my camera in plain sight (which is big in itself, considering I now have that white lens glaring away…) and denied myself a few good opportunities because I was afraid of what people would think/say. In fact, the only people-photo I took was of some kids climbing a tree, and that was from across the street. Even then, their parents noticed and yelled to me “they’re the Nantucket monkeys!” or something like that. At least it was friendly…I wonder what that guy smoking the pipe and window shopping would have said if he caught me photographing him at point-blank range…

Anyway, good work being brave. I will try to do the same next weekend.
